Chapter Thirteen

Morgan had no idea what had come over her. She wasn’t sure if it was the beer or the flickering flames or the intense sweetness of the s’mores that made her act like she was invincible. She was behaving like she was the main character of her own movie, confidently waltzing through the deep dark woods as if there was some beacon of light she needed to chase down, a mission to complete.

It was dangerous. Reckless. Stupid even, because who the hell went wandering off into the woods at night? Only silly people with a penchant for attracting bears. Or worse, men who acted like bears.

Morgan had no idea where she was or where she was headed, but she knew one thing: Sydney was right behind her.

She could hear the padded thumps of Sydney’s footsteps on the forest floor and the soft rhythm of her breathing. Her senses felt heightened. Her ears were picking up every sound, and her eyes were becoming more in tune with the darkness of the night. Not to mention the electric thrill coursing through her body. She was practically buzzing and had no idea what had started it.

Maybe it was the way Sydney kept catching her gaze all evening, holding it just long enough for a spark to ignite before dropping it like a hot piece of coal. Or maybe it was the way both Morgan and Sydney had seemed to gravitate toward each other, inching closer along that log until even Liv raised an eyebrow when Sydney’s pinky finger brushed against Morgan’s. Or maybe Morgan wasn’t a cut above the rest. Maybe she was like everyone else, with primal urges, deep-rooted desires to be wanted, to be desired, to be fucked. All Morgan did know was that if she had gone to sleep right now instead of fucking Sydney, she wouldn’t survive the night.

“Where are you going?”

Morgan whipped around. She didn’t say anything. She only closed the gap between them and slid her palms across Sydney’s cheeks, bringing her mouth right up against her own.

The woman groaned. That groan was everything and more. It tore Morgan up from the inside. She could barely breathe. Her heartbeat seemed to be everywhere but in her chest. It was beating in the crook of her arms, between her thighs, and behind her eyes.

The pressure worsened when Sydney broke the kiss and skimmed her lips over Morgan’s neck, moving her mouth down to her collarbone.

Morgan felt like she was about to burst.

But she kept herself together—barely—and directed Sydney to the nearest tree. They were far enough away from the campsite that Morgan could easily imagine they were the only two people left in the world. But they were close enough that if they happened to be attacked by a wild creature, their screams would easily be heard.

“This is a first for me,” Morgan muttered, breaking the kiss just long enough for those few words to slip from her lips.

“What is?” mumbled Sydney. Her hands hadn’t stopped roaming.
